State Sen. Bill Stouffer (R-Napton) on February 1, 2012, is bringing forward legislation aimed at finding common ground, following renewed concerns about texting while driving in Missouri. Under Senate Bill 717, distracted driving would be defined as failure to give full time and attention to driving or engaging in any other activity which causes a driver to be distracted from operating his/her motor vehicle. A person who violates these provisions would be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor, unless an accident is involved, then it would be a Class A misdemeanor. He is advocating the use of push-to-talk and hands-free devices.
