COPE Act...to be or not to be?2006-04-29 21:25:03mariwinn

Congressman Roy Blunt joined the overwhelming majority on the House Energy and Commerce Committee that voted for the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) without Net Neutrality protections. According to a posting in savetheinternet.com, Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment, a principle called Network Neutrality that currently prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which websites should work best for or even be available to their Internet customers. However, EarthLink applauds the committee by saying that the COPE Act of 2006 is a win for cities and towns that want to build WiFi networks for their residents, businesses and government agencies and helps ensure a competitive marketplace for broadband services by rejecting efforts that would have restricted municipal networks in more than a dozen states.
