How many people know the history of the Pledge of Allegiance? That it was first suggested by the editors of a children's magazine entitled, The Youth's Companion ?
Then in 1892 President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed that it be recited during Columbus Day observances in the public schools as follows:
I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
On Flag Day in 1924 the phrase, "the flag of the United States of America" replaced the words, "my flag." Thirty years later the pledge was further amended with the addition of the words, "under God."
