"Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed while beating up George Zimmerman, who he had forced to the ground."
Fixed it for you.
No one as of yet has explained why Martin was justified in initiating physical violence, and someone who's on the ground being beaten up generally has a reasonable fear that his life is being threatened.
You would also do your cause better by being more specific about how Zimmerman "a history of violence"; obviously that had not risen to the level of a felony, otherwise he would have been charged as a felon in possession of a gun. The same goes for a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction, although that's a Federal crime (felon in possession is a Federal crime and I presume always a state crime as well).
This is not to say that Zimmerman is blameless; presumably if he'd waited for the police Martin would not have initiated physical violence against them ... but then again, you make a big deal about how Zimmerman would have appeared to be intimidating to Martin so who knows?
