Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was built by the Nashville & Chattanooga Railway from 1848-1852. Cowan grew as a town when the trains started running in about 1853, and it was quickly evident that the trains needed assistance in making the grade to the tunnel. Pusher Engines were assigned to Cowan, and are still used regularly. As an active track for CSX today, you'll see freight trains with two additional engines attached to the rear of the train; and then see the pusher engines returning to town on their own.
