| Two men that Maryville, MO police have described as black males with dreadlocks are being sought for a shooting that took place on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University after the homecoming football game on Saturday afternoon. No one was injured when three shots were fired near a crowd of students celebrating NWMSU's come-from-behind win over rival Washburn.
Because of the shooting, Gov. Matt Blunt has directed co-chairs of the Campus Security Task Force, Mark James, director of public safety and Dr. Robert Stein, commissioner of higher education, to provide him with an after-action report by the end of the week. They will be getting input from Clarence Green, director of campus safety at NMSU, who is a task force member.
"...An after-action report provides valuable lessons learned and emphasizes where improvement can be made to avoid other violent acts on academic campuses,” Blunt said.
Rod Surber, the director of public information at Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, Gary Snavely, director of safety and transportation at Missouri State University, Springfield, and Brian Stewart, CEO of Bryan College in Springfield represent local involvement in the 29-member task force.
The task force, established by the governor in response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech, drew upon the knowledge and experience of its members and other concerned individuals throughout the state to examine the safety and security at Missouri's institutions of higher education. A complete list of their members as well as their report submitted last August may be found here.
