Har-ber Village offers historic craft workshops amelia

Har-Ber Village Museum craft room in Grove, Oklahoma will host a series of historic craft workshops this fall as part of its mission to offer programs authentic to the American experience for the whole family to enjoy.

On Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, students will learn basic wet and needle felting techniques and use those skills to needle felt a silhouette picture (subject of student's choice) onto a wet felted background. All supplies are provided. Class times are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost of class is $45; class size is limited to five with Joi Chupp as instructor.

The Weaver at Har-Ber Village will present a weaving workshop for beginners September 20-21. Learn to read drafts, warp a four-harness floor loom and weave a table runner. Loom use and materials are included in the cost. Class times are Saturday (9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) and Sunday (12:30-5:30 p.m.). The fee of $125 includes materials and use of loom. The class taught by Jeannie Wheatley is limited to five participants.

A twining workshop will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014. Twining is a weaving technique that involves twisiting two pieces of weft around a warp thread. The class includes all materials, a twining frame and instructions. Participants will finish their first project during this three-hour class from 9 a.m. to noon; the fee is $45 and the class taught by Jonee Davis is limited to 12 students.

Participants will discover the age-old process of making pure natural soap from lye and lard on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014. This practical workshop provides the knowledge and experience needed to make additive free soap at about one third the cost of soap purchased at the store. Participants will also learn how to use homemade soap to make liquid cleaner and laundry soap for further savings. Recipes and directions for soap, laundry soap, molds, hints on natural additions that will make specialty soaps for use and gift giving, and two bars of homemade soap are included in the cost. Class times are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The fee is $15; the class limited to 15 is instructed by Tim Field.

Workshop fees are in addition to the cost of Har-Ber Village Museum admission. (Adults 14-62, $10; Seniors 63+, $7.50; students ages 6-13, $5; under 6, free. Family rate $30 for 2 adults and up to 5 students.) Har-Ber Village, 4404 West 20th St., Grove, OK, is open daily, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sundays, 12:30-6 p.m. through November 15, 2014.
