Former Spiva director to be recognized

Jo Mueller of Joplin, executive director of the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts until her recent retirement, has been selected to receive the Leadership in the Arts award from the Missouri Arts Council, a division of the Missouri Department of Economic Development. The award is one of five 2016 Missouri Arts Awards given to individuals, organizations and communities by the council in recognition of their contributions to the cultural and artistic legacy of the state. Mueller and other awardees will be presented with original glass art created by Chris McCarthy of Park Avenue Glass in St. Louis at a ceremony on February 10, 2016 at the Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City.

The other awardees are Halcyone Ewalt Perlman of Columbia, teacher and a founder of the Perlman-Stoy School of Ballet and its performing wing, the Mid-Missouri Dance Theatre, for "Arts Education;" STAGES St. Louis, a musical theatre company for "Arts Organization;" the community of Chillicothe for creation of 20 murals and several festivals, for "Creative Community;" and John L. Schaefer of Kansas City, organist and director of the vocal and handbell choirs of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, for "Individual Artist."
