Joplin Police Blotter: Another thief busted

On June 9th, 2010 at 5:20 p.m. Joplin Police received a call of an attempted robbery at the West 7th street Walmart in Joplin. Employees stated that a white male passed a note to a cashier at the branch of the Arvest Bank demanding cash. The cashier called for a manager and the suspect left before obtaining any money.

A vehicle description was given out and an officer on patrol, after spotting a vehicle matching the description at about an hour later, attempted to stop it. The vehicle, described as a black 990s model Chevy pickup, was pulling a trailer. When the driver attempted to elude the officer, a vehicle pursuit started in the area of 26th and Schifferdecker.

Police utilized stop sticks to slow the truck and trailer down. The driver ran from the vehicle in the area of Perkins and Maiden Lane. A K-9 officer assisted in tracking and apprehending the suspect.

It was learned that the truck and trailer were reported stolen out of Columbus, KS. Detectives are investigating other possible crimes relating to the theft.

Joseph W Garrett, age 31, of Joplin has been charged with 2nd degree attempted robbery, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest by fleeing. The total amount of bond was set at $20,000.
