Joplin Police Blotter: Suspect shoots himself  blewis
Updated: 2011-09-18 08:26:57
The Joplin Police Department SWAT team was called out in the early evening hours of September 16, 2011, after a Joplin Police Detective, arriving at 2625 E. 11th St., Joplin, attempted to make contact with a person of interest in a child abuse case.

The detective was at the front door of the residence at approximately 4:42 p.m. when a loud report came from the rear of the residence. This was followed by a second loud report. The detective believed it to be gunshots and called for assistance.

A perimeter was set up and the SWAT team was called in to assist. Tactical officers cleared the residence and then proceeded to a workshop located behind the residence from which the loud reports had come. Gas was introduced into the workshop and tactical officers made entry a short while later, finding 59-year-old Richard W. Carpenter deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

No officers were injured during the incident, and Carpenter was alone at the residence when the incident occurred.
