Logan M. Skelley does it again brogers
Updated: 2007-07-07 13:54:42

Logan Mark Skelley, pictured, of Joplin, a Cornell University pre-med student, is one of five recipients that received the National Young American Award by the Advisory Council of the National Executive Board, Boy Scouts of America. The award that included a cash prize of $7,500, was presented during the National Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA on June 1, 2007.

The National Young American Awards were first presented in 1968 and are given to youth attending college to age 25 who have achieved exceptional excellence in the fields of art, athletics, business, community service, education, government, humanities, literature, music, religion, or science; have been involved in service to their community, state, or country that adds to the quality of life; and who have maintained an above-average scholastic grade point average.

To qualify for the award Skelley assembled an outstanding track record of achievement and service. As an Eagle Scout, he attended the National Scout Jamboree and all three national high-adventure bases and scaled several of Colorado’s highest peaks.

During high school Skelley participated in science fairs, physics and rocket clubs, the TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) program, and National History Day. Among other achievements, he was a finalist in the 2006 International Science and Engineering Fair and twice placed in the top ten in National History Day competitions. He played varsity tennis for four years while enjoying scuba-diving and off-roading.

He enjoys historical and scientific research and placed first in the nation in the Civil War Preservation Trust National Essay Contest. He also attended the National Scholars Academy where he studied blood vessel development in cancer cells.

Skelley’s record of service is broad. He has been a hospital volunteer and a Missouri Forestkeeper, he built a walking trail at the George Washington Carver National Monument, and he developed a program to help poor families pay heating bills.

Among Mr. Skelley’s many awards are the William T. Hornaday Award and the Congressional Award Gold Medal. He is the recipient of several national scholarships.
