St. Louis features month-long arts festival bsharp
Updated: 2011-09-29 09:02:15
Dozens of performances and shows will take place throughout St. Louis during the annual October festival, which celebrates the full range of American arts with music, dance, theater and visual art. The event will run from September 30 until October 16, 2011.

Love live theater? Take a seat for Red, the explosive story of abstract painter Mark Rothko at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The gender-bending Victor/Victoria is the festival highlight at Stages St. Louis and The Who’s Tommy rocks the Stray Dog Theater.

Music fans will find a full range of performances at Jazz St. Louis, including Stanley Jordan’s Trio, the Anita Jackson Group and George Benson. The Sheldon Concert Hall presents Blues diva Kim Massie, Javier Mendoza and a variety of programming throughout the month.

Art lovers will enjoy “The Ties That Bind: Art Quilts by Members of the Fiber Artists Coalition,” on exhibit at the Sheldon Art Galleries, or “The Best of Missouri Painters” exhibition at the Missouri Botanical Garden. American Highlights tours will take place at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Dance is part of the American Arts Experience as well with Dance St. Louis presenting the Martha Graham Dance Company and HEARDing Cats Collective unleashing "60 x 60" – that’s 60 St. Louis dancers performing the choreography of 60 St. Louis artists, each set to 60 one-minute music pieces by 60 different composers.

The American Arts Experience festival is a collaboration created to draw attention to the quality and breadth of the arts in St. Louis. Paul Reuter, founder of the festival and executive director of The Sheldon, hopes visitors will take advantage of these artistic offerings. “There are so many organizations doing great work – we invite everyone to come and experience the arts in St. Louis,” he says.

The full schedule of American Arts Experience – St. Louis is available on the festival’s website here.
