Crowder to expand health care program c-brown
Updated: 2008-03-13 11:33:00
Crowder College is proud to announce the receipt of a $1,426,086 grant to develop and implement training programs for individuals seeking employment in rapidly growing healthcare related fields.

The grant was funded by the Employment and Training Division of the U. S. Department of Labor to address the rapid increase in demand for well trained health care professionals and will meet the challenges of finding qualified employees in Southwest Missouri. Specifically, it is estimated that the job demand for registered nurses will increase 25% between the years 2007 and 2010.

The Crowder College program includes the following targets:

  1. Increase the number of Nursing graduates from the Nevada campus to 50 per year.

  2. Develop an associate degree in nursing in Cassville to serve 25 students per year.

  3. Create an associate of applied science in health occupations which will allow students who currently have a certificate in a health support area (such as emergency medical technician) to articulate credits into the program, which will help them complete the program of study without unnecessary delays and duplication of instruction.

Also, an articulation agreement with Franklin Technical School and Missouri Southern State University is included in the grant to help develop a pipeline of students destined for advanced degrees in the healthcare field. This cooperative effort is called the Student Nurse Accelerated Program (SNAP). A SNAP candidate would enter the LPN program at Franklin Technology Center; continue into the Associate Degree Nursing (RN) program at Crowder College and on to complete a BSN at Missouri Southern State University.

Efforts will also be made at the junior and senior high school level to begin awareness and early recruiting of potential students. Presentations will be made in area high schools offering insight into the opportunities in the health care field for Southwest Missourians.

According to Crowder's president, Dr. Alan Marble, “Receipt of this grant is greatly appreciated. We look forward to expanding not only our services, but also to further developing the partnership with Missouri Southern State University and Franklin Technical School. We have gained multiple partnerships in the healthcare industry and will continue working diligently to create opportunities in education for our communities.”
