On November 18, 1978 he F/A-18 Hornet took its first flight--35 years ago. A celebration in honor of the aircraft took place recently at the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Maryland. Originally designed to replace the F-4 Phantom and the A-7 Corsair II, today the F/A-18 platform, including the Hornet, Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler, operates in 44 Navy and 11 Marine Corps strike fighter and electronic attack squadrons worldwide. The all-weather F/A-18 is used as an attack and fighter aircraft.
