| The Cures Without Cloning initiative (CWC) to prohibit human cloning in Missouri yesterday has questioned Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s inaccurate re-write of the initiative’s ballot language. We are exploring all options to move forward and protect the democratic process.
The Secretary of State has made an overt political attempt to confuse the Missouri voters through her egregious and blatantly inaccurate re-write of our initiative’s ballot summary. All Missourians would agree that they deserve the right to vote on clear, concise, and accurate ballot referenda. Unfortunately, the Secretary of State is trying to prevent the voters from exercising this basic right, by playing deceitful political games.
The courts have held that the Secretary of State has some latitude in editing ballot summary language submitted to her office. In this case, however, the Secretary of State has clearly surpassed this latitude and drafted new ballot summary language that differs greatly from the actual proposed Constitutional amendment.
Why are some, including Robin Carnahan, so afraid to allow the Missouri voters a fair, clear, up-or-down vote on whether or not they want to prohibit human cloning? We will explore all our options, up to and including impeaching the Secretary of State. All Missourians should know of the Secretary of State’s scandalous actions to confuse the voters and block the democratic process.
Launched in August 2007, Cures without Cloning (CWC) is leading a broad-based, statewide coalition of grassroots organizations committed to prohibiting the cloning of human beings in Missouri. Passage of this initiative will ensure this dangerous, unproven, unnecessary practice is prohibited, and allow us to focus on safe research that leads to lifesaving cures and treatments.
