Gaylord Moore, horticulture specialist, retires d-burton
Updated: 2007-10-27 14:17:07

Gaylord Moore, at right, knows plants, trees, shrubs, flowers and lawns. And, most Ozarkers feel like they know Gaylord Moore.

Since 1979, Moore has been working with University of Missouri Extension as a horticulture specialist (19 years in Greene County). In a part of the country that is crazy about flowers, plants and gardening, Moore has become well known.

During his tenure with MU Extension, Moore has literally answered thousands of questions from novice and professional gardeners. He has written thousands of newspaper articles and columns on gardening and lawn topics, helped to train Master Gardeners, and he has given gardening advice on KOLR-TV10 every week since 1989.

“Gaylord will be acutely missed by staff and clients. He has been iconic in the area of horticulture education in the region and really, throughout the state,” said Rick Mammen, southwest regional director for MU Extension. “A hole would exist in any organization when a person of Gaylord’s technical expertise, high ideals, character and professionalism leaves.”

The process to fill Moore’s position has been delayed somewhat but the position remains essential to MU Extension’s mission in southwest Missouri and will be filled according to Mammen.

Moore says he plans on spending his retirement fishing, working in the yard, traveling with his wife and keeping up with his grandchildren. He may even fill in as a teacher for next year’s Master Gardener training in Greene County.

His last day at the MU Extension Center in Greene County is Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007.
