Joplin students garnered five of eight awards in the George Washington Carver Art & Essay contest, an event sponsored by the Carver Birthplace Association, Missouri Southern State University School of Education and the African American Experience Fund of the National Park Association. Fourth grade students from across the region submitted over 450 art and essay submissions based on the theme, "If George Washington Carver were my teacher."

In the art category, first place goes to Kaleb Larson at George Washington Carver Elementary in Neosho. Luke White at Diamond Elementary took second place, and Anna Nguyen at Eastmorland Elementary in Joplin won third place.

In the essay category, Stapleton Elementary students swept all three awards. Trashun Galvin won first place, Jewell-Lee Sneddon took second place and Makenzie Jewett won third place.

The most creative classroom award for art was awarded to the classrooms of Ms. Davidson and Ms. Coots at Liberal Elementary. Mr. Crites' classroom at West Central Elementary in Joplin was chosen the most creative for essays.

An awards ceremony honoring all participants will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 27, 2010 at the Visitor's Center at the George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond. Entries will remain on display through March 28.

Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, the George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator and humanitarian. The monument is located two mile west of Diamond on Highway V, then 1/2 mile south on Carver Road. For more information, phone (417) 325-4151 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., park hours.
