Trucker Pipes is honored dsparks
Updated: 2008-03-05 15:40:18
John Pipes of Pacific, MO, a company driver for Con-way Truckload of Joplin, has been named the second place winner in the 19th Annual Company Equipment Driver of the Year contest sponsored by Truckload Carriers Association, Detroit Diesel and Truckers News.

The announcement was made March 3, 2008, during TCA’s Annual Convention at The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. His prizes include an all-expense paid trip for two to the Grand Ole Opry, $2,500 in cash and $3,000 in truckstop gift cards.

The Company Equipment Driver of the Year contest honors the top company drivers based on their excellent safety records, unblemished work histories, and community and industry involvement. Pipes, a certified driving instructor, has worked for Con-way Truckload since 1988 and has logged more than 2.9 million accident-free truckload miles.

“One of my proudest accomplishments is that the students I trained are now approaching two million miles and have students of their own. I have grand-students,” Pipes jokes.

When not driving a truck, Pipes completed basic firefighter and auto rescue classes so he can be better equipped to help stranded motorists if necessary. He also volunteered for the Route 66 Senior Center, helping to pack and deliver meals for the needy.
