May 30, 2015

One of the gardens on the Springfield Watergarden Society's 20th Anniversary Pond Tour that is available for viewing on both days contains a small koi pond with waterfall.

Tour 20 gardens in and around Springfield, including many with watergarden features, and youll come home with plenty of ideas for your own landscaping. You'll also spend a delightful time outdoors during Springfield Watergarden Societys 20th anniversary event. It will be held from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2015.

The watergardens on the tour range from three-acre lakes to tub gardens and everything in between, said Pat Ware, president of the volunteer organization that was established in 1995. We will also have shade gardens, vegetable gardens and conifer gardens in addition to a wide array of flowers. Each garden is unique and each offers something extra special. All are filled with an abundance of ideas that might find their way into your garden.

Tickets are $10 per person, good for both days of the tour, and may be purchased at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, Garden Adventures in Nixa, Maschinos Home Express, Wickman Gardens and Schaffitzels Greenhouse. Ticket holders will receive a booklet that includes descriptions of the gardens, addresses, driving directions and suggested routes between garden sites.

The gardens may be visited at your leisure from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Five of the gardens are for Saturday only and five for Sunday only and 11 are open both days. So either Saturday or Sunday, you can see a minimum of 16 gardens or if you tour both days, you could see a total of 20 gardens, explained Ware.

As a bonus, ticket holders will also receive free admission to Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden during the two days of the tour. Out of towners will be able to purchase tickets at the Springfield Botanical Center in Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic Rd., Springfield (north of Battlefield Road) and then stroll through the Japanese garden.

Members of the Springfield Watergarden Society may attend the tour at no cost. Calendar- year memberships (next renewal January 2016) are $15 per family. For a membership form go here. A watergarden is not required to be a member.

In the first year of its organization in 1995 by a small group led by Dave and Ruth Smelser, the Springfield Watergarden Society began its public pond tours. In 2000, the club hosted the yearly convention of the Associated Koi Clubs of America. A park partner with the Friends of the Garden and Springfield Botanical Gardens in Nathanael-Greene Close Memorial Park, the Springfield Watergarden Society is well known in the community for its plant sales. This year, members will sell water plants during the Friends of the Garden Butterfly Festival on July 11, 2015.
