| First glimpse of planet Mercury | jhu-ps | | Updated: 2011-03-30 09:40:19 |  | | | MESSENGER has sent back its first image of Mercury as the spacecraft sailed high above the planet's south pole, providing a glimpse of portions of Mercury's surface not previously seen by spacecraft. Continuous mapping of Mercury will begin on April 4, 2011. A flood of new information about the innermost planet is expected over the coming year. |
