PhotoSpiva announces 2007 competition
January 29, 2007

The George A. Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin has issued a call for entries for PhotoSpiva 2007, a national photography competition open to any photographer in the United States or its territories. John Paul Caponigro (at right) will be this year's nationally-recognized juror.

PhotoSpiva, with the distinction of being the oldest continuous photographic competition in the United States, is open to amateurs and professionals. $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded, and any photographic process is eligible.

All entries must be mounted on rigid backing and over-matted with presentation-quality white mat board (minimum two-inch border). No off-white or colored mats, framed prints, or 3-D work will be accepted.

Photographers may submit one to five prints for a fee of $40.00 by check or money order made payable to Spiva Center for the Arts. All fees are non-refundable. All work offered for sale during the exhibit is subject to a 40% commission.

The deadline for hand delivered or postmarked entries is 5 p.m. on February 13, 2007. Chosen work must remain with the exhibit from April 28 through June 22, 2007. Declined work will be returned beginning on May 8.

A down-loadable prospectus may be found here.

About the juror

John Paul Caponigro combines his background in painting with traditional and alternative photographic processes using the digital platform. An authority on creativity and fine digital printing, he teaches both privately in his studio and at select public venues.

He is contributing editor for Camera Arts and View Camera, and a columnist for PhotoTechniques and Digital Photo Pro. His book, Adobe Photoshop Master Class (Adobe Press, 2003) is now in its second edition. Exhibited internationally, his work resides in numerous private and public collections, including Princeton University, the Estée Lauder collection, and the Smithsonian.

According to Caponigro:

My work is not a document of vanishing places and current social practices. It is a call to connection whose aim is to inspire conscientious creative interaction with our environment. It is my hope that my contributions inspire others to make their own unique and authentic contributions in highly personal ways.

Caponigro lecture

"Reflections," a slide show talk will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2007, at Cornell Auditorium on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. Caponigro will show his images of water, one of the planet's most precious resources, and will share his thoughts about the extraordinary changes taking place in contemporary photography. His social concerns include not only environmental issues, but the uses, abuses, and influences of visual media.

While answering questions from the audience, Caponigro will display an alternate body of work entitled "Wastelands."

Reservations for the lecture may be made by sending an e-mail here or by phone at (417) 623-0183. Admission is by voluntary contribution.

This year's exhibition is being sponsored by David and Debra Humphreys. A grant from the Freeman R. Johnson Trust will underwrite the awards.

Spiva Center for the Arts is located at Third and Wall in downtown Joplin. Spiva galleries and Gift Shop are open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sundays 1–5 p.m.
