| The George Washington Carver Birthplace Association (CBA), in conjunction with George Washington Carver National Monument, is pleased to announce that three recipients have been chosen to share the 2009 George Washington Carver Scholarship. An awards tea honoring the recipients will take place at 10 a.m. at the monument in Diamond on Saturday, May 16, 2009 as well as during the annual Carver Day celebration on July 11.
The recipients are Bobby Lee Bible, a student at Pierce City High School who will be attending Crowder College; Randall Hunter Dowell, a student at Joplin High School who will be attending Missouri Southern State University; and Steffanie Annette Meyer, a student at Liberal High School who will be attending Pittsburg State University.
“I want all who applied and the entire community to know that due to the quality of all the applicants, the Selection Committee had a very difficult time making its decision,” said Dr. Bill Abernathy, selection committee chairman. Abernathy added, “The young people who applied embodied many of the best characteristics of Dr. Carver, including a commitment to high scholarship and a commitment to community service. Just as the world needed George Washington Carver, the world certainly needs individuals like those who applied for the Carver Scholarship. We commend them all and wish them the best in all their future endeavors.”
The George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator, and humanitarian. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, MO on Hwy V, then south ½ mile on Carver Road.
