Joplin Recycling Center offers iris exchange l-onstot
Updated: 2009-09-10 10:01:11
In recognition of the city's official flower, an iris bulb swap table has just been added at the Joplin Recycling Center. Bulbs should be dropped off before mid-October.

Since free wood chips and compost were available at the center, Mary Anne Phillips, recycling coordinator, suggested that an exchange of iris bulbs was a natural fit. Dividing iris bulbs in the garden is recommended to prevent overcrowding and to promote more blooms.

Guidelines for digging up the bulbs are:

  • Each division should have one or two leaf fans.

  • Use a waterproof marker to write the name and or color on a leaf.

  • Wrap bulbs in newspaper.

  • Discard the old plant or any bulb that is not healthy, is soft, or has few white feeding roots.

The center is located at 1310 West A St. Hours until November 3rd are 3-7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays and 0 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
