Fee for recycling monitors and TVs is reduced
December 15, 2009
A new vendor will be working with the city of Joplin's recycling center to handle the recycling of monitors and televisions. Effective December 8, 2009, residents will be able to drop off this type of electronic equipment for a fee of $10, 50% less than the fee previously announced.

We are pleased to be working with a vendor who is able to provide this service at a lower rate than we have previously experienced, said Mary Anne Phillips, recycling coordinator. We work with numerous companies in providing opportunities for our citizens to recycle and understand the cost of this process. Although this was unexpected, it is a great change and we feel very fortunate that we can pass this reduced rate on to our citizens.

At this time, the TV and monitor fee is the only fee charged by the recycling center. All other qualifying items are freely accepted on a regular basis, including cardboard, fiberboard, magazines, office paper, newspapers, telephone books, plastic #1 and #2 bottles with necks, all colors of glass, metal, packing peanuts, #2 plastic shopping bags, ink jet and toner cartridges, all batteries, and waste electronics. Other e-waste items that are accepted without a fee include computers, speakers, keyboards, computer mice, adding and answering machines, pagers, all types of telephones, printers, audio and video equipment, digital cameras, facsimile (fax) machines, and computer peripherals. However, photocopiers never are accepted due to agreed upon recycling rules with Joplin's contractor.

When dropping off a computer monitor or TV, payment may be made at the recycling center using a check or money order. Customers paying with cash or debit/credit cards must first pay at the finance department, 3rd Floor, city hall, 602 South Main St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, then provide the paid receipt when dropping off the items.

The recycling center is located at 1310 West A St. (east of Maiden Lane) The center is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-6 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center will be closed December 24, 25 and January 1. Hours on December 31 will be noon to 4 p.m.

For any further information, contact the recycling department at (417) 624-0820, ext. 501.
