The City of Joplin Independence Day Celebration will be held on Friday, Jul. 4, 2014, at Landreth Park, according to an announcement by Joplin Parks and Recreation officials.

The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with the opening of the food court. Carnival-type food items will be sold as well as the new addition of the sale of glow sticks and glow toys. Entertainment will be provided by local artists beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Diversity Band and will include Plymouth Junction and Big Smitty. Fireworks put on by Liberty Pyrotechnics will begin at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Free trolley service again will be offered from the Joplin Memorial Hall parking lot at 7th & Joplin streets beginning at 7 p.m. The last ride back will be at 11 p.m.

For those driving to the event, parking is available to the east of the park off of North Landreth Avenue. Murphy Boulevard from Pool Street to North Main Street will be closed at 2 p.m. Other roads in the area will remain open.

Personal fireworks, grills or the creation of any fires will be prohibited, according to Paul Bloomberg, Joplin recreation and events manager. "We want to keep the park as safe as possible for everyone to enjoy," Bloomberg said.
