SI of Joplin announces annual awards

Local women were honored recently at the Annual Awards Banquet of Soroptimist International (SI) of Joplin.

The Live Your Dream Awards were presented to two women who are primary wage earners for their families seeking to better their circumstances by getting educational degrees. Melinda Blankenship, who is pursuing a degree in occupational therapy at Crowder College and Missouri Southern State University, received a $1,000 stipend and will be qualified for additional awards at the SI regional and federation levels. Staci Davidson received a $750 award to continue her education in the nursing program at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

Lisa Nelson was presented this year's Ruby Award acknowledging a woman working in extraordinary ways to improve the lives of other women and girls through personal or professional involvement. Nelson helped revitalize the Girl Scouts' Camp Mintahama. She also will be eligible for additional awards at the SI regional and federation levels.

The recipient of the Soroptimist Best Woman of the Year Award was Amanda Mitchell for her contributions to the organization. She started or expanded several SI of Joplin programs including the creation of a Selfie Project with Joplin High School, spearheading the new Dream It Be It Career Support for Girls program, reinvigorating the Advocacy and Awareness committee and locally launching the Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence. She also has been instrumental in updating both the club's website and Facebook pages.

"We are proud to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of women in our community as they strive to achieve their educational goals, improve the lives of others and make our community a better place, said Jennafer Johnson, SI of Joplin president.

SI of Joplin is a volunteer service organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Founded in 1937, the Joplin, Missouri club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas which has nearly 100,000 members in 120 countries and territories.
