Carp fishing gains in popularity mariwinn
Updated: 2006-07-19 11:53:32
Steve Harris, a guest of Fred Moret of Kansas City, the co-organizer with Harry Goodliffe of a fishing event held on Bull Shoals Lake in June, shows off a carp that weighed in at 11 pounds, 4 ounces. He had been pre-fishing for an event sponsored by the Carp Anglers Group, a non profit organization that promotes carp fishing as a true sporting event.

The Carp Anglers Group is especially strong in the Midwest and eastern parts of the United States, with growing pockets in the Southwest, Canada and Europe. CAG is recognized as the North American specimen club for carp by the Carp Society in England, an achievement made by the group in its nascent stage.

The group's newsletter, "The North American Carp Angler," published quarterly, is filled with fishing tips, club news, big-fish reports, and book and product reviews. Goodliffe reports that it is evolving into the first magazine devoted to carp angling published in North America.

CAG holds numerous regional events at sites around the USA and Canada each year and also sponsors a few national events, including the Chicago Carp Classic - the competition for the title of North American Carp Champion.
