Missouri American Water Company has issued a boil order for an area one block west of Range Line Rd. to the state border and north from 50th St. to the airport. According to Missouri American Water Company the boil order is due to "increased turbidity due to recent flooding." The previous boil advisory has been updated.
Residents in the affected area will be under a boil order until further notice. Customers in the area listed above should bring their water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes before using for drinking or cooking. The boil order will be in effect until water quality samples confirm that the water is safe for consumption. Customers may call Missouri American Water’s 24-hour customer hotline at (866) 430-0820 for more information.
The City of Joplin’s Health Department has recommended the following be done:
- Water should be boiled vigorously for five minutes prior to use for cooking and drinking.
- An alternate water source may be used, such as bottled water, commercially available water through major water distributors; or accessing water from a friend or neighbor outside of the affected area.
- Dump ice cubes made with water during boil order advisory.
- Water should not be used for food preparation unless it has been boiled for five minutes
- An alternate water source may be used, such as bottled water, commercially available water through major water distributors; or accessing water from a friend or neighbor outside of the affected area.
- Use a two-basin system for dish washing. One basin should contain hot soapy water and the other should have one teaspoon of unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of water for rinsing. Wash dishes accordingly in soapy basin, and rinse in bleach enhanced water basin before drying. An alternative to this method is to utilize disposable plates and flatware until notified that the boil order has been dismissed.
- There are no risks indicated in the use of water for doing laundry.
- For personal hygiene/bathing the water can be used by residents who are cautioned that they should not ingest any water during this time; use germicidal soap when washing hands.
A special set of recommendations has been issued for commercial establishments especially dealing with the use of ice making machines.
