| A group of Joplin women who meet regularly decided towards the end of March 2008 to form a non-profit aptly titled Girls Night Out, Inc.
"Hey, we do this anyway," Susan Laudwig, one of the board members said. "Why not meet to empower other women?"
What they decided as their goal was to empower women through education and opportunity. They hope through profits from local and regional events to accumulate enough money to be able to provide college scholarships for non-traditional female students attempting to return to the workplace. Currently, they are working with Missouri Southern State University on application criteria.
The first gathering they've planned includes attending the red carpet premiere of Sex and the City slated for June 2, 2008, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Hollywood Northstar 14 Theater in Joplin, followed by an exclusive after show party from 8:30-10 p.m. at the Gateway Creamery, which, although for sale, remains open for such events.
The inaugural event in part will be underwritten by local sponsors willing to provide food and entertainment. The cost of admission has been set at $25 per person.
The women that compose the board are not unknown to the world of charity, Laudwig explained. She spoke of familiar women--like Tiffany Alaniz, the assistant news director for KSNF and KODE-Tv; Michelle Lester, with FourStatesHomePage.com; Cindy Marlow-Sweet, an account executive for KOAM-TV; Priscilla McKinney with Merchant Services and Pamela Roychaudhury Bhend on the staff of Legal Aid of Southwest Missouri.
Laudwig stressed that other women interested in their cause should join them. They especially are looking for new members with accountancy skills and insurance experience, she said.
