| The exhibit, “Hidden Jewels; Centennial Quilts of Oklahoma,” will open with a reception at the Pioneer Woman Museum of Ponca City beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007. The show offers all quilt lovers and history buffs an exciting look at Oklahoma centennial history. The exhibit will continue until May 6.
Highlighting the show are 20+ quilts that have been gathered from around the state and show the complexity of quilts that arrived or were made during the early years of Oklahoma statehood development. The quilts range from the utilitarian--worn and loved to fancy quilts that came with the pioneers to keep them warm or to decorate their new homes. Pictured above is a quilt that is an example of a complex mariner’s compass. It was made in North Carolina and brought to Sapulpa, OK in the very early 1900s.
The Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays – Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.50 for seniors and $1.00 for children.
The exhibit has been supported by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild. For directions to the museum go here. For additional info, phone (580) 765-6108.
