March 04, 2006
JOPLIN - The Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center will hold a ground breaking ceremony in Wildcat Park, Joplin, on Friday, March 10, at 10 a.m., to commemorate the beginning of construction of the nature center. The public is welcome to attend.

“After four years of research and planning, we are thrilled to be at a point to begin construction,” says Tony Robyn, Executive Director, Wildcat Glades Audubon Center. “The public has been overwhelmingly supportive ensuring the imminent success of the campaign and project.”

To date the campaign has raised over $5 million toward the $5.5 million goal. “We still have more dollars that need to be raised in coming months to match the $300,000 Kresge Challenge Grant,” adds Fred Osborn, Commerce Bank, Capital Campaign Chairman. “It’s not over yet, but the community has embraced this project and is looking forward to this important asset for the area.”

According to the construction team, the building process should take twelve months. Once completed, the Audubon Center will feature classrooms and a large seminar hall for school and community use. Also included will be interactive exhibits with a large collared lizard terrarium and a spectacular aquarium that interprets our region’s natural features. Visitors will enjoy beautiful gardens and landscaping along with a network of trails focused on connecting them to the beauty of the outdoors.
