February 28, 2004
JOPLIN (SNS) - Missouri Southern State University's Law Enforcement Academy will resume several eight-hour firearms safety training courses that will satisfy the training requirement for the "Conceal and Carry" statute in Missouri. This training course has been approved for residents in the counties of Barton, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald and Newton.

Participants will receive training in the legal requirements for the use of force, care and cleaning of firearms, handgun safety, and legal aspects of firearms. The course also includes live-fire and simulated-fire exercises; participants must pass a live-fire qualification exercise. The Southern Law Enforcement Academy will utilize the state-of-the-art live-fire range and two state-of-the-art computerized (electronic) firing ranges.

The cost of the course is $95.00. Participants are required to bring their firearm, eye and ear protection and 50 rounds of ammunition. Participants who do not supply their own firearm and ammunition must pay an additional $25.00 charge. All fees must be pre-paid.

In order to obtain a "Conceal-Carry" permit, Misssourians must:

  1. Be at least 23 years of age

  2. Be a U.S. citizen and either have lived in the Missouri for six months or be stationed here as a member of the Armed Forces

  3. Undergo state and federal criminal background checks
