The mosaic work of Sharon L. Plummer, a 1976 graduate of Missouri Southern State University, along with five other artists from the Houston,TX area, will be featured on the April 4, 2010 episode of ABC-TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. It is set to air as a special two-hour program on ABC-TV from 7-9 p.m.
A mosaic provided for the house from the Houston MOSAICO group is part of a total home rebuilding for the Beach Family of Kemah, TX, whose home still was unlivable 18-months after Hurricane Ike hit the Texas community in September 2008.
When Plummer learned that Extreme Makeover was coming to the Galveston Bay Area, she recognized an opportunity to make a unique contribution to families in need. She contacted five fellow members of MOSAICO-HOUSTON who live near the Kemah house and their whirlwind ride began. Those artists all agreed to participate in the project as a sponsor--donating all of their design, fabrication, and installation time, as well as all the materials and supplies.
Extreme Makeover designer Michael Moloney requested that the artists create a mosaic headboard for the 18-year old daughter's bedroom. From the time Plummer received the invitation on January 10 to create the mosaic, to the time that the installation of the artwork on the wall was completed on January 14, the mosaicists were virtually totally consumed by the project.
The 5-foot by 5 1/2-foot custom headboard was fabricated at the studio of Brian Patrick of Seabrook, TX, before permanently being mounted on the wall in the Beach family home. The glazed ceramic tile mosaic was created on two pieces of lightweight tile backer-board and the off-site construction technique allowed the fabrication to be done on a horizontal plane rather than directly onto the vertical wall. The two sections were transported to the makeover house, fitted together, and then screwed into the wall. The final steps of the installation were to inset a ceramic rope trim, apply grout to fill the spaces between the ceramic tesserae, and then to clean and buff the tiles.
A mosaic this size would typically require 6-8 weeks for a mosaicist to design and fabricate. In order to keep in line with the program's timeline, the artwork and installation were done in 3 1/2 days. The group sometimes worked 18-hour-long marathons to get the job done on time.

Plummer actively has been involved in promoting mosaic art and mosaic artists as a founding member of MOSAICO-Society of Houston Mosaic Artists and as a board member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
Prior to opening Plum Art Mosaics in Houston in 2002, Plummer was a marketing manager for 17 years with ExxonMobil in the Houston area. She grew up in Joplin and has relatives in and around the Joplin area. She is a contributor to the Joplin Schools Foundation, a Lifetime Member of the MSSU Alumni Association, and makes generous contributions to the MSSU Annual Fund Campaign. Plummer moved to Houston in 1978 and in 1986 married Chandler Davidson, a recently retired professor at Rice University.
About Extreme Makeover
Some may not know that ABC-TV does not provide funding for activities supporting construction on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The local builder who leads the project relies on the community for donations of money, as well as the donation of time, expertise, building materials, and home furnishings. Go Back |
