| JEFFERSON CITY - Twenty-three law enforcement agencies provided additional enforcement activity on Interstate 44 from 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, through 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, from Joplin to St. Louis. They were looking for speeding, aggressive and impaired drivers and encouraging motorists to pay attention and buckle up.
As a result of these efforts, officers worked 458 hours with 708 traffic stops which resulted in the following violations charged:
- DWI - 9
- Speeding - 273
- Seat belt - 52 (in combination with another violation)
- Uninsured motorist - 49
- Possession of drugs - 7
- Suspended/revoked license - 19
In addition, nine fugitives were caught.
The I-44 statewide corridor enforcement detail is the last part of a summer-long "The HEAT Is On" campaign aimed at reducing the number of fatal and serious injury car crashes in Missouri. Other statewide efforts were seen along Interstate 70 at the end of June. After Interstate 70, I-44 is the second most deadly roadway in Missouri in terms of traffic fatalities. During the past five years, Missouri has recorded the highest number of fatal and serious injury crashes between July and September. In the summer of 2010, 258 people were killed and 1,716 suffered disabling injuries.
Along with increased enforcement on Missouri's highways, the HEAT campaign also focuses on spreading safe driving messages through radio advertisements and internet videos. For more information about the "HEAT Is On" campaign, visit here.
