Joplin Freethinkers to meet
April 12, 2009
A meeting of the Joplin Freethinkers will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Hackett Hot Wings, 520 S. Main St., Joplin.

Freethought is a viewpoint that asserts that beliefs should be formed on the basis of logic, reason and evidence, and should not be influenced by dogma, authority, superstition or tradition.

A freethinkers organizer from Kansas City, Iggy Dybal who found a small group of local people on a meetup.com search invited them to meet with him at I-Hop in mid-Jan 2009. He encouraged them to organize and search for other like-minded people in the Joplin area. (He also organized the Springfield Freethinkers group in January).

There were only four from the Joplin area who attended that first meeting, but they have been meeting every Thursday since with a growing number of members. Thirty attended the April 2 meeting at the Joplin Public Library featuring Darrel Ray, author of The God Virus.

The group is primarily social with the ages of members ranging from 29 to 66. The group, strong advocates for separation of church and state, are a mix of atheists, agnostics, deists and humanists. Contrary to Christian thought, they aspire to the concept of morality without God.
