St. Peter's Middle School in Joplin is sponsoring a trip to Washington, D.C. from January 18-21, 2009, that includes attending the presidential inauguration. The group, organized by Brenda Durbin, will witness the new president taking the oath of office, hear the presidential inaugural address, watch the inaugural parade, and in the evening attend an inaugural ball.
While there the group also will visit the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Washington Monument and will make a photo stop at the White House and tour Mount Vernon, former home of George and Martha Washington. A tour of the U.S. Capitol is a highlight of the tour, which includes a visit to the U.S. Supreme Court and the National Archives home of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Durbin is issuing an invitation to St. Peter’s Middle School students, parents, grandparents, siblings over six years of age, and anyone else interested in going.
Spots are available for other travelers interested in seeing history take place. Durbin said, “This is a historical event and we want to be there to witness it. We could be seeing the first African American president or the first Woman president of our country. No matter who takes the office it will be history and we will be there!”
The total cost for the trip organized by EFSmithsonian, a company that has organized school tours for over 40 years, is $1179 for students and $1304 for adults and includes round trip airfare from Kansas City, ground transportation by private tour bus in D.C., hotel accomodations for three nights (children assigned four to a room and double occupancy for adults) with continental breakfasts and dinners, sightseeing tours led by licensed tour guides and medical and accident insurance.
