| Meant to raise awareness for native plants for the home landscape and foster environmental stewardship with their use, the Missouri Botanical Garden in collaboration with the University of Missouri Extension, Powell Gardens and the Mizzou Botanic Gardens has announced their 2008 plant selections. Regionally proven plants suitable for the St. Louis region have been selected by members of the horticulture industry based upon criteria that includes increasing landscape plant diversity and creating low maintenance through minimized pesticide usage and energy and water conservation.
The plants listed are meant for a variety of soils and locations. An example from the annuals list is blood flower (Asclepias curassavica), a 2-3 foot tall sub-shrub grown in full sun in evenly moist soil that is deer resistant, a necessity for some gardens where the four-legged pest runs amok.
Illustrated plants categorized as annuals, perennials, shrubs, vines and trees all include brief descriptions as well as links for more information and plant sources. In addition, information about "emeritus" plants in the same categories is made available.
