Jennifer Nguyen, a fourth grade student at Eastmorland Elementary School in Joplin, won a second place award for her poster, pictured at left, that was entered in the Missouri Department of Transportation's 2008 Work Zone poster contest.
Three hundred thirty-six students recently drew images of ways to convince motorists to slow down in work zones as part of the Missouri Department of Transportation's Work Zone poster contest. The entries show that Southwest Missouri students know orange barrels, highway workers and speeding motorists don't mix.
MoDOT reports that in 2007, five people were killed in work zones, a 74 percent decrease in deaths from 2006 when 19 people were killed. Eight MoDOT employees have been killed in work zones since 2000. Statistics show that motorist inattention, exceeding the speed limit and following too closely are the leading causes of work-zone crashes.
The winners in this year's poster contest are:

- 1st place: "Slow Down! And Keep workers safe" by Liam Haley, Stockton Elementary School; 2nd and third place: "Work Zone Safety - Please slow down, my daddy works here" by Allie Baldwin and "Work Zone Awareness - Safer Driving=Safer roads by Tasha Simon, both Joplin's Irving Elementary.
- Fourth grade
- 1st place: "Safety Is Not a Game" by Isabel Saldivar, Carthage's Mark Twain Elementary; 2nd and 3rd place: "Slow Down - Give them a break for their sake! Slow down" by Jennifer Nguyen and "Have a Heart. Slow down" by Stella Ndauwa, both from Joplin's Eastmorland Elementary.
