| Members of the Dogwood Trailblazers will be conducting two non-competitive American Volkssport Association-sanctioned walking events on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in the southwest corner of Missouri.
The start time for the first walk will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Southwest City. Maps outlining the route will be handed out at a registration table in Blankenship Park, 501 N. Main St. (Highway 43). Finger food will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the finish of the walk.
Among the features that may be seen on the Southwest City walk is the stone that marks the west edge of the Mason-Dixon Line. Walkers may circumvent the stone to step foot into Oklahoma and Arkansas. The trails, ranging from 7K (4.4 miles) to 11K(6.8 miles) also will lead to Polson Cemetery and the grave of Gen. Stand Watie, the only American Indian to attain the rank of brigadier general during the American Civil War. He was the last general of the Confederacy to surrender.
In the afternoon, farther north along the Missouri/Oklahoma border, will be the Seneca walk. Participants, who sign up at the registration table at the entrance to Bordertown Bingo & Casino, 129 W. Oneida St., will be able to choose either the 10K(6.2 mile) or 5K (3.1 mile) route, beginning anytime between noon to 1:30 p.m.
Dogwood Trailblazers is a club based in Joplin. Anyone interested in becoming a member may inquire during a walking event or attend one of the regular monthly meetings, which are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at Joplin Family Y South, 3404 W. McIntosh Circle, Joplin.
