Pohnpei, located roughly between Honolulu and Guam, is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia. A volcanic island, it has an abundance of rain that sustains lush tropical forests, cascading mountain streams and tumbling waterfalls and flora surrounding hidden freshwater pools. It is the site of Nan Madol, known as the Venice of the Pacific, a city built around lagoons by the rulers of Pohnpei between 750-1500 AD.
It is eden for scuba-diving tourists with money. A growing number of Pacific Islanders, however, have decided to call Neosho, MO home and have become a significant addition to the city's cultural diversity.
To acknowledge this relationship a Special Note of Friendship will be exchanged between the city and the state of Pohnpei, creating a sister-city relationship between the two.
A signing ceremony between Howard Birdsong, mayor of Neosho and John Ehsa, governor of Pohnpei will take place at 1:30 p.m. on July 8, 2008, at the Lampo Building, 500 E. Spring St.
