Library offers alternative to plastic use
August 20, 2008
The Joplin Public Library is going "green" by offering an alternative to the plastic bags they previously offered free of charge at check-out.

The new blue fabric bags are 14" x 18" that conveniently fold up to form a 3" x 4" pouch with an attached drawstring and carabiner (metal clip) to attach to a belt loop or other accessory. The bags, decorated with the library's logo, may be purchased in the circulation department for $5.00 apiece.

Marian Kelly, circulation supervisor, is hoping this alternative to the annual use of thousands of plastic bags will become popular amongst concerned patrons. "We're very excited over the number of plastic bags this could keep out of the landfill," Kelly said. "We think reusable bags are more responsible--and they're so compact, you can always have one with you."
