Tri-state area plans fall Route 66 sports event
December 29, 2008
Update: The Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Mother Road Marathon planning committee has announced the postponement of the upcoming Tri-State Route 66 Mother Road Marathon which was scheduled to take place October 3rd of 2009.

Taking into consideration the current economic climate and how it might affect the generating of sponsorship support as well as factoring in some logistical difficulties, the Marathon planning committee decided that postponing the run until October of 2010 would be a benefit to the event.

Keep the date October 3, 2009 in mind. You may need from now until then to get in shape for what has been dubbed "one of the fastest growing events in the country."

The Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau together with a special committee have announced the planning of an inaugural Route 66 Mother Road Marathon, a tri-state event that will begin in Miami, OK, follow Route 66 through Kansas and into Missouri and end at Joplin Memorial Hall's parking lot downtown on Seventh Street. While an exact distance hasn't been released for the run, it will also take in the cities of Quapaw and Commerce in Oklahoma and Baxter Springs and Galena in Kansas.

The Route 66 Mother Road Marathon Committee expects to attract over 1000 participants for what could become an annual event with Route 66 binding together the tri-state area as a tourism region. Special events with the Route 66 theme will also take place surrounding the marathon. And during Joplin's June 2009 Boomtown Days a preparatory "half marathon"is being planned.

The Route 66 Mother Road Marathon Committee consists of Warren Turner, Dwayne Russell, Heather Goff Collier, Matt Lee, Tom Rutledge, Darren Gallup, Jim Adams, Chris Stauffer, Bill Hoover, Larry Eller, Beth Peacock, Vince Lindstrom, Paul Bloomberg, and Doug Joyce. They are seeking additional volunteers to act as race monitors, to serve on hospitality crews and be members of teams for water and food distribution.
