"Coexist," "I've Got the Beat" and "Monotony" are examples of how art may be used to symbolize words.

Melanie Curti, an art education major from Missouri Southern State University-Joplin, has come up with a unique idea for her senior exhibit for the fall of 2010. She has named it "Word Up" and its ultimate object is to raise awareness for the global importance of keeping the arts in school curricula.
Her idea is to have participants send her postal cards on which they have connected a word, phrase, quote, poem or song lyrics to an image, bringing out visual consciousness or what's in their mind's eye. She then will cull her responses and post them on facebook before sending copies to local school districts and government officials responsible for providing funding in support of the arts.
"What I'm trying to find is a small connection or a formation, a sequence for how [one's] brain works in relation to art," Curti explains. Instead of focusing on letters or spelling in the formation of words, Curti wants the focus to be on a picture or symbol for each written word, thereby calling attention to the significance of visual expression.
To be part of her project, send an illustrated postal card to: Word Up, P.O. Box 694, Webb City, MO 64836 USA. For more information contact Curti here. Go Back |
