Another use for beet juice
January 05, 2010
Joplin - MoDOT's Southwest District is using a new anti-icing product made from sugar beets to help keep state highways clear.

Geomelt, a patented sugar beet by-product, is an organic de-icer used by many states and cities. The beet juice is less corrosive than salt to vehicles and bridges, is more effective at melting ice at lower temperatures when combined with salt, and prevents the salt from caking and hardening in the salt domes.

The Southwest District crews using beet juice include those at Monett, Joplin, Sarcoxie, Nevada, Butler, Stockton, Osceola, El Dorado Springs and Cassville, with more likely using the de-icer in upcoming winter seasons.
