Disaster mitigation is funded staff
Updated: 2011-03-15 11:19:58
Jasper County for its use and surrounding counties of Newton, McDonald and Barton has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant by way of the Harry S Truman Coordinating Council. The $111,150 grant will be used to fund land-use planning related to long-term disaster mitigation. The funding was set aside by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a Disaster Recovery Enhancement Fund assisting states in meeting very specific needs not funded by an initial disaster supplemental appropriation.

A total of $5,000,000 was appropriated for buyout properties affected by weather related disasters during 2008. Cities benefiting from the buyout funding include Ferguson for a $1,100,000, Hannibal for $181,400, Jefferson City for $548,000, LaGrange for $296,105, Marble Hill for $70,475, Poplar Bluff for $342,938 and University City for $461,082.

The Harry S Truman Coordinating Council has been serving Southwest Missouri since 1991. The council, located at 800 E. Pennell in Carl Junction, provides comprehensive and coordinated planning to shape a vision for the future growth of the region. Harry Rogers, a former mayor of Carthage, has headed the council since its inception. For a contact form go here.
