Mother Road Marathon plans take shape

Plans continue for the second annual Mother Road Marathon on Route 66 scheduled for Sunday, October 9, 2011. A unique course takes runners through Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri along the famed route, beginning in Commerce, OK (full marathon) or Baxter Springs, KS (half marathon) and finishing in Joplin, MO. Runners for the marathon and half marathon must be at least 16-years-of-age by race day. Buses will be provided to take runners from the Joplin Athletic Complex to their respective starting points.

Registration for the races will be ongoing until 11:59 p.m. central time on October 6. Participants, who may save $10 by registering before October 1 pay $80 for the full marathon, $60 for the half marathon and $25 for the 5K. To register go here.

Participants or their representatives are asked to bring a copy of a paid receipt with confirmation number and the runner's valid ID to packet pick-up from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main St., 1st floor. Packets will include a bib/race number, swag bag with goodies, course map, final race instructions and tickets for a pasta party to be held from 5-8 p.m. that day at the Central Christian Center Fellowship Hall, located on the 400 block of Main Street. Additional tickets may be purchased as supply permits.

A Victory Lane post party will be held just beyond the finish line at the Joplin Athletic Complex, 3301 W. 1st St. Scheduled are live entertainment and activities. Food and merchandise will be available for purchase.
