October 25, 2011
The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR designed by Moshe Safdie opens November 11, 2011 to a completely booked audience. Crystal Bridges, a nonprofit organization founded by Alice Walton who continues to serve as chair of the Board of Directors, was sponsored in part by a grant from Walmart that allows for free admission but the Walmart Stores Inc. is in no way connected to the museum's development, construction or planning or ownership of the permanent collection that spans five centuries of American masterworks ranging from the Colonial era to the present. The Crystal Bridges complex includes the galleries, a library, meeting and office space, a glass-enclosed gathering hall, a museum store designed by Arkansas architect Marion Blackwell, a restaurant located in a glass-enclosed bridge overlooking the ponds and areas for outdoor concerts and public events. The 120-acre grounds offer more than three miles of walking and biking trails open daily from sunrise to sunset with sculpture gardens and interactive educational areas. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. It will be closed on Tuesdays and holidays that include Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information search crystalbridges.org.
