The Weather Channel to honor Gabe Allen
November 15, 2011
The Joplin High School Marching Band will perform tonight at the home of Joplin Police officer Gabe Allen. Allen was chosen as a weather channel "Epic Christmas" hero and will receive a holiday home makeover and other prizes.

Hosted by Steve Watson (Monster House, Don't Sweat It), the premier television event will air on The Weather Channel at 8 p.m. CT on December 19, 2011. "Epic Christmas" will "make this year's holiday season brighter, giving five exceptional people who have helped friends, family, neighbors or strangers during this year's extraordinary weather a Christmas to remember," according to a news release from The Weather Channel.

In addition to Allen who spend more than 18 hours digging through rubble of the May 22 tornado, rescuing anyone he could find, the awardees include David Miller of Pratt City, AL, a single father and cancer survivor who collected necessities for community members after the Birmingham EF-5 tornado left many homeless; Patti Miller of Sierra Vista, AZ, a real estate agent who raised nearly $100,000 to help fight wildfires throughout Arizona; Raegan Junge of Keystone, IA, a 6-year old who raised more than $1500 selling homemade bracelets to assist an elderly couple who lost everything in the Joplin tornado ; and Suzy Godding of Mahwah, NJ, a stay-at-home mom who, in response to Hurricane Irene, founded Mahwah Elves, a volunteer organization whose mission was to assist in the clean-up effort in her community.
