Prairie chicken population is increased
April 18, 2014
Forty-five greater prairie chickens were released at The Nature Conservancy's Dunn Ranch Prairie in Hatfield, Missouri during the month of April 2014. The prairie chickens were trapped on privately owned land in Burwell, Nebraska, where the birds are more plentiful. Conservancy employees are also helping to monitor the prairie chicken population. The release is the conservancy's continuing attempt to recreate America's heartland. Visitors who are interested in hearing native bird songs, seeing vibrant wildflowers and feeling the rumble of bison hooves on the open grassland should contact Hilary Haley at (660) 867-3866 or hhaley@tnc.org to learn about upcoming tours of the property.
