[Editor's note: Yay, they are awaiting confirmation.]

An attempt to break a Guinness world record for the longest ribbon used in a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be made at 1 p.m. on October 3, 2014, at the dedication of Joplin High School and Franklin Tech, 21004 Indiana Ave., Joplin. Vice President Joe Biden and Missouri Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will be present when the 6.5 mile ribbon, symbolizing the path of the May 22, 2011 tornado took, will be displayed.

The ceremony will mark the end of Joplin Schools' three-year journey to rebuild after the tornado that destroyed half of the school district and took the lives of seven students and one staff member in the total toll of 161 lives lost.

In January 2014, Joplin Schools reached a milestone in its recovery efforts with the opening of Irving Elementary, Soaring Heights Elementary, and East Middle School, returning more than 1,300 students to permanent schools. On Sept. 2, 2014, the rebuilt Joplin High School/Franklin Technology Center, the last of the district's major rebuilding projects, opened for more than 2,200 students and staff.

The current record of 5.51 miles is held by the state of New Jersey for the ribbon cutting held to re-open the Jersey Shore on May 24, 2013.
